Welcome to Calm Space by JY.

Where yin yoga and contemplative practice meets practical legal wisdom

I am Jian Yuan (JY), a Singapore yoga teacher and lawyer working at the intersection of contemplative practice and practical legal knowledge.

With over 15 years of legal practice and more than 9 years of yoga teaching experience (including over 4,000 classes taught, of which 1,300 are yin yoga classes), I bring professional rigour and embodied experience to the work I share here.

Calm Space by JY offers free educational content through the blog, covering legal resources for yoga teachers in Singapore and in-depth explorations of yin yoga practice and theory.  The shop provides downloadable digital products, including guides on fascia, tissue adaptation, and comparative studies of yin and restorative yoga, designed for teachers, trainees, and dedicated practitioners.  Whether you are navigating studio contracts, understanding intellectual property, or deepening your knowledge of meridian theory and mindful movement, the resources here are built to support your teaching and practice.

My approach is informed by years of contemplative study with teachers including Jo Phee and Sarah Powers, e-RYT 500 and YACEP certifications, and is grounded in the practical realities of running a yoga business in Singapore.  I invite you to explore the blog, browse the shop, and join the mailing list to stay connected with new articles and resources as they are published.

Teacher Trainings and Educational Resources

I have conceptualised, designed, and led training programmes and workshops for yoga teachers, experiences that continue to shape my approach to teaching with clarity, depth, and care for both rigour and accessibility.  Alongside in-person teaching, I am developing Clear Law for Yoga Teachers, a 7-module digital toolkit designed to address the legal and practical realities that teachers navigate daily – from contracts and intellectual property to insurance and studio relationships.  This work reflects my commitment to advancing yoga education through resources that are both grounded in professional expertise and responsive to the actual needs of teachers building sustainable practices.

Practice with me

I currently teach public classes and workshops at Hom Yoga, with a primary focus on yin yoga and contemplative practices.  My teaching is grounded in the belief that yoga offers us an opportunity to slow down, listen inward, and cultivate a deeper awareness of our bodies, breath, and internal landscape.

In my classes, I create safe, nurturing spaces where students are invited to observe physical sensations, thoughts, and the emotional body, towards experiencing mindfulness and compassion not just as concepts, but as lived realities.  I draw on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) frameworks and the contemplative teachings of the Buddha Dharma to support practitioners in accessing deeper levels of awareness and consciousness.

Whether you are new to yoga or an experienced practitioner, my classes aim to offer grounding, calm, and reflective spaces, where you can reconnect with what matters most to you.
